Category: OtherNews Title: Co. Roscommon: art@work artists residency programme
Dates of News Item: 09-03-2010 to 26-03-2010
Telephone: 090 66 37285
Email: artsoffice@roscommoncoco.ie
Details:
As part of art@work, artists from any arts discipline, spend three weeks in a company or service in County Roscommon making work motivated by the environment, staff and working practices of the company Since its inception in 2001, the art@work programme has continued as a unique outlet for contemporary art to be integrated into society – introducing not only art, but also artists, and the processes of making art, to new audiences.
Artists are not necessarily expected to make work collaboratively; rather the artist is simply making work for a period of time in a different place of work than usual. Quite naturally however, the work is clearly influenced by the artists’ adopted environment, relating strongly to that particular situation thus providing a greater interest and involvement in the work from staff.
To the artist art@work offers the opportunity to explore different methods of working and to produce work in a unique context that allows for greater participation in the creation of the work. To staff at the company, art@work stimulates a pride and recognition of the value and nature of both the artists work and the work of the company. To the company the programme offers a valuable and unique advertising platform in both a local and national context as well as being an innovative project which reflects well on the company from many perspectives.
Last Year Create collaborated with Roscommon County Council Arts Office to produce a publication which further investigated the experiences of those involved, providing a rich insight to the motivations, processes and outcomes of each of the residencies. Sarah Tuck, Director of Create said that “the art@work programme provocatively re-inscribes arts practice as work, whilst simultaneously acknowledging the creativity of work itself. In situating the artist in work contexts, both the artists and the staff have an occasion to reappraise what it is that they do as part of the daily routine and ritual of working life.”
How the programme works –
Initially companies and artists are separately asked to express their interest in becoming involved in the programme. From this a one day group site visit is arranged where artists together visit each of the participating companies. From this the artist can prepare a proposal as to how they would approach the residency at their chosen company or companies.
How to get involved –
If you are interested in participating in art@work, simply email artsoffice@roscommoncoco.ie or call 090 66 37285 to register your interest before Friday 26th March, after which a day of site visits will be arranged to participating companies. A full list of participating companies will not be available until April but previous participants are listed below.
The Proposal –
The proposal is not a definite “in stone” document but rather an indication of how the artist would complete the residency if their course did not alter during it. This is essentially an indication of the artist’s methodology and their understanding of the company. We would expect that the residency itself would dictate how the work would progress and that it would, in the end, substantially differ from the original proposal, but in order to decide who participates and how appropriate or feasible an artist’s residency is likely to be, we assess proposals only on the information and CV submitted. An artist can submit as many proposals as they like for as many companies as they like.
Schedule –

Details:
Twice yearly, the Arts Council offers grants managed by Create to enable artists and communities of place/interest to work together on projects.
The Artist in the Community Scheme is open to artists from artform disciplines including architecture, street art, film, visual arts and traditional arts.
The aim of the scheme is to encourage intense collaboration between communities of place and/or interest and artists, culminating in an artwork or a project in which the members of the community group and the artists work together in order to realise an artistic project or an event. It is essential that meaningful consultation take place between the artist and the community group, so that both parties are involved in deciding on the nature of the project. Group ownership of the art should be maintained at every stage.

News Title: Chrysalis Arts UK (worked on Kilkenny Woodstock Project in 2009) Launches Sustainable Approach to Public Art: FREE GUIDELINES
Dates of News Item: 20-01-2010 to 20-12-2010
Email: kate@artdepot.org.uk
Website: http://www.pasaguidelines.org

Details:
The first ever set of FREE guidelines to help artists and commissioners embrace the sustainable as well as the artistic impact of their work has been launched by Chrysalis Arts
Public Art Sustainability Assessment (PASA for short) is a free interactive assessment tool available from
Kate Maddison, Director at Chrysalis Arts comments:”
“ When we set out to discover how to address sustainability within our public art practice, we were dismayed to find so little information to guide us. This prompted us to take the first step and start the process of establishing our own method of working sustainably. What we found interested us greatly because it threw the spot-light on issues that are relevant to others involved in commissioning and creating public art and beyond that to the way society values sustainability.”
“ Art has an ability to reflect and potentially influence our behaviour and public art is by its nature in the public eye. Chrysalis Arts believes it has a role to play in promoting responsible behaviour in this context. It soon became clear that we needed to disseminate this information widely, as the issues need to be dealt with by everyone involved in the process of planning, commissioning and implementing public art.”
The online interactive checklist is easy to use and covers the key issues which surround sustainable practice in public art. This checklist is supported by full guidelines and useful case studies.
To use the free PASA checklist and download the guidelines please visit and register at www.pasaguidelines.org
PASA has been created for artists and creative practitioners as well as public art organisations, local authorities, developers, commissioners, funders, architects, landscape architects, engineers, contractors, communities, schools and anyone else who may be involved in the commissioning, development, creation, maintenance and decommissioning of public art at different scales and in different contexts.
Chrysalis Arts have developed PASA in consultation with a wide range of partners – including artists and arts organisations, local authority officers, specialists from higher education establishments and environmental consultants Gaia Research, as well as looking to government sources and other creative practitioners such as architects for guidance on sustainable principles and practice.
“While artistic considerations should be foremost in creating public art, there is no reason why artists cannot embrace sustainable principles in the way in which they conceive and implement their ideas, as long as this is supported through the funding and commissioning process… “ Kate Maddison
Chrysalis Arts view PASA as very much the starting point in the debate around public art practice and sustainability, and hope that by throwing the debate open to others, the result in the long term will be a more sustainable way of working.

News Title: Dance Research Forum Ireland’s 3rd International Conference
Dates of News Item: 04-01-2010 to 27-06-2010
Email: carmel.mckenna@lit.ie
Details:
Thursday 24th – Sunday 27th June, 2010
Hosted by The Firkin Crane, Cork
The conference explores improvisation in dance research and practice.
What is improvisation and how relevant is it to dance research and practice? Is improvisation a subjective experience; a creative tool; a mode of performance - or all or none of the above? How is improvisation transmitted? What methodologies or techniques are used or are being developed; and how is improvisation documented? What or who are the primary and secondary sources?
Broadly defined as \'spontaneous composition\', improvisation has always been an integral part of dance practice. The aim of this conference is to identify and document how and where improvisation has been, and is being, used in dance practice; and its relevance and importance in dance research and dance practice as research.

Escape from the hustle-bustle and demands of everyday life to the tranquillity of Cnoc Suain in the West of Ireland, and immerse yourself in the written word for a weekend. Our courses offer you the chance to leave behind the demands of the outside world and dedicate precious time to your writing. The work undertaken will be varied and stimulating: morning workshops will involve reading poems together and short writing-exercises; time will also be set aside for longer writing or editing exercises; tutors will offer one-to-one feedback on work submitted, and guidance on how to improve reading your poems in public. In the evenings there will be poetry readings by established poets and participants will be encouraged to read their work also. As a result of this total immersion and the absence of the usual distractions, this short period of time will seem much longer than a weekend. To maximise the potential benefits of the course, we recommend (but do not insist) that you share your writing with the rest of the group in workshops. We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with some of your tutors’ work prior to your arrival.

Telephone: 059 9170301

Details:
In 2010, Carlow Local Authorities will commission a new community based opera through the Per Cent for Art commissioning programme.
This opera will be a unique and high-profile event - the first of its kind to be commissioned by any local authority in Ireland.
The opera will be designed specifically for Carlow performers and it will involve large numbers of participants, including both those with previous musical and theatrical experience and others who are new to performance. The project will involve a year-long programme of training, preparation and rehearsal, which will be undertaken in collaboration with Carlow VEC, beginning in September 2010.
It will culminate in public performances in the George Bernard Shaw Theatre at Visual in mid-2011.
During the first half of 2010, work will begin on the creation and composition of the opera. Composer Brian Irvine and writer Peter Morgan Barnes will lead this process and they wish to meet and interact with communities throughout County Carlow in order to devise a locally-generated story for this landmark piece of music.
To achieve this, individuals and community groups are encouraged to attend one of a series of Stage 1 workshop sessions (see below for dates and details) to help generate the scenario for the opera.
These workshops will be held throughout the county between 9-11th Feb 2010.
Participation may be on a one-off basis, although participants who have an interest in following the development of the opera further, may participate in a Stage 2 workshop on Sat 13th Feb in the GBS Theatre, Carlow, from 11am-4pm. In Stage 2 participants will contribute further to the setting of the opera and the structuring of its content.
Opportunities will exist at a later stage for participation as a performer, but these workshops will focus exclusively on generating the scenario and setting of the opera.
Please relay this information to individuals or community groups in County Carlow who you feel may be interested in participating.
By taking part in one of these workshops you will be playing a role in developing an innovative new work of art, you will bring your experience of Carlow to bear on this new work and you will be part of the very beginning of an exciting new project.

As you like it
Wednesday 3rd March @ 7pm
THEATRE IN hd From Shakespeares Globe theatre
Rosalind, the daughter of a banished duke, falls in love with Orlando at a wrestling match. Her usurping uncle, jealous of her popularity banishes her from court. Disguised as a boy she leaves with her cousin Celia and the jester Touchstone, to seek out her father in the Forest of Arden. Here she meets Orlando again and, under the guise of a young man, counsels him in the art of love and wooing.
A firm favourite among Shakespeare’s comedies, and including some of his bestloved characters, As You Like It runs the glorious gamut of pastoral romance: cross-dressing and love-notes; poetry and brilliant conversation; gentle satire, slapstick and passion.
La Boheme(Puccini)
Saturday 6th March 7pm
Opera in HD from The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden
Teodor Ilincai and Hibla Gerzmava
Opera in HD from The royal Opera House, Covent Garden
Puccini’s best-loved work, with its unforgettable period designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman, comes to the big screen with an outstanding cast.
La bohème is one of the most famously melodious and eternally popular
of all operas. The carefree attitude of youth and the harsh realities of life are poignantly contrasted through the tender affair of Mimì and Rodolfo, from the heights of their first meeting through to its tragic end. One of The Royal Opera’s most loved production, brings to life Paris of 1830 in detailed sets and
costumes as we travel with the characters between bare attic, crowded café and a wintery street right on
the city’s edge. La bohème promises an evening of engrossing imagery and stirring drama.
Loves Labour Lost
Wednesday 10th & 17th March @ 7pm
THEATRE IN hd From Shakespeares Globe theatre
The King of Navarre and his courtiers have forsworn every kind of pleasure. But a visit from the Princess of France and her lovely entourage soon has this all-male ‘academe’ tearing up its own rulebook.
Shakespeare’s celebration of the claims of young love is a festive parade of every weapon in the youthful playwright’s comic arsenal – from excruciating cross-purposes to silly impersonations, drunkenness, bustups and pratfalls. It’s also his most joyful banquet of language, groaning with puns, rhymes, bizarre syntax, grotesque coinages and parody.
L’elisir D’amore
WEDNESDAY 24th March @ 7pm
Opera in HD from glyndebourne
Sung in Italian with English subtitles
Set in an idyllic vision of a Southern Italian village square, Donizetti’s delightful opera tells of the romantic rivalry between the penniless Nemorino and the bumptious Sergeant Belcore for the love of the beautiful, bookish Adina, whose reading of the tale of Tristan and Isolde makes poor lovesick Nemorino think that the wonder-working Dr Dulcamara might have just the potion his heart requires
Not the Messiah: He’s a Very Naughty Boy
Thursday 25th March 2010 @ 9PM
IN HD
A fabulously entertaining 90 minute comic oratorio by Eric Idle and John Du Prez (creators of Spamalot) inspired by Monty Python’s Life Of Brian filmed at its only European performance at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2009 to celebrate 40 years of Monty Python.
This hilarious take on the Messiah features the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Choir, a host of superb soloists in the lead roles including Rosalind Plowright and Eric Idle, with Michael Palin as Mrs Betty Parkinson and special guest appearances from Pythons Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. And of course three sheep!
Like Handel only funnier
THE BOLSHOI BALLET
LIVE IN HD FROM MOSCOW
WEDNESDAY 31st MARCH 2010 @ 7PM
\"Les flammes de Paris\" is a Soviet ballet on the theme of the French Revolution, in a version however expurgated of its ideological connotations. \"Les flammes de Paris\" was staged for the first time in 1932 and won the Stalin prize fifteen years later he indeed appreciated it quite particularly.
This ballet is also very famous for its impressive finale: all the participants march towards the stalls aiming their numerous weapons at them. Removed from the stage after 1964 it is revived here by Alexei Ratmansky. As there was almost nothing of Vassili Vaynonens original choreography left, Alexei Ratmansky completely reinvented it and made an entirely brand new dance show of it

Many of you may remember Etaoin Holahan’s life size stencils and Patrick O’Connor’s exquisite drawings and paintings. David Beattie will surprise us with a short sound piece and we will be presenting some paper works by Polly Minett. Stephane Kiszak you may remember created large works utilising layers of collage and paint while Gypsy Ray focussed on her swimmer drawings whilst also involving the public and creating a number of wonderful blind contour drawings for us to enjoy. Lesley Frew created her work from recycled plastic bags giving the materials a second life by transforming and reusing them. Hugh McCarthy delighted many with his large very colourful paintings and Niamh White charmed many with her invitation to come and make bread for your valentine. She also worked in photography and painting. Aisling Keating and Abi Ighodaro were invited to introduce a new art form to the residencies, they sketched, drew and of coursed danced.
We hope you can make the time to come and enjoy the show which will run from February 11th – March 31st 2010.

News Title: KILKENNY: LITTLE GHOST ARTISTS STUDIOS FOR RENT

Details:
The Little Ghost Gallery is looking for new artistic neighbours. We are hoping to build up an artist community in and around the area of the Coach Road on the way up to St Canice’s Cathedral and Dean Street. This area has many properties to let and many empty office and shop front that we feel are going to waste. This is where we feel the artistic community can step in and create an established artistic ghetto of sorts.
There is a great studio space beside the gallery up for rent and we are hoping to get artists in make a creative atmosphere. The room is split into three spaces, one large, one medium and one small. There is a storage closet and the small room to the front could be used as a dark room if it’s needed. It’s a cosy little space and looks out onto the hill up to Canice’s Cathedral.
The space is ideal for an artist studio and would comfortably house at least 3 - 4 artists. The space is unfurnished but I\'m sure there would be a skip you can steal from somewhere. There is Gas heating and the electricity can be run off a meter if it suits you better than a bill.
Kilkenny is becoming a great place to set up shop as an artist. Since the new by-pass went in Dublin is less than an hour and a half away. Its 20 min from Thomastown and 10 min form Bennetsbridge. Perfect. If you’re an artist wanting to set up a new artist collective with a few other artists this space would be perfect and you have a gallery next door, what more do you need?
If you or someone you know would be interested in renting this space please contact us at the Little Ghost Gallery by emailing us at littleghostgallery@gmail.com and please pass it on to anyone you know who may be interested.

News Title: MCCULLOUGH MULVIN ARCHITECTS FOR NEW BUTLER GALLERY, KILKENNY
Dates of News Item: 15-01-2010 to 15-03-2010
Email: info@butlergallery.com
Website: http://www.butlergallery.com

Details:
The Butler Gallery, in partnership with Kilkenny County Council and Kilkenny Borough Council, are delighted to announce that after a competitive process through Public Procurement, McCullough Mulvin have been appointed as the architectural firm to oversee the Gallery’s relocation to the Evan’s Home, Barrack Lane, John Street in the centre of Kilkenny City.
The development of a ‘cultural quarter’ by the Kilkenny local authorities has been prioritised as key to the infrastructural, economic, and cultural development of Kilkenny City and County. The contribution that culture makes to the growth of an innovative, integrated, knowledge-based economy is underpinned by the reputation and operating ethos of the Butler Gallery, whose decision to initiate plans for a new building was regarded as an integral part of this development.
The project represents a first phase of development, which involves partial conservation of the existing Evan’s Home and the provision of a new addition to accommodate the Butler Gallery’s important Permanent Collection, Temporary Exhibitions and Education facilities. In addition, a Tony O’Malley Gallery is planned to house a promised gift of significant works by the late Kilkenny born artist from the estate of the artist. This first phase of development is made possible by a grant awarded to the Butler Gallery by the the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism through ACCESS II funding 2007-2009, with the balance being met by the Kilkenny County Council and Kilkenny Borough Council.
McCullough Mulvin, who will begin work on this project this January, are an ideas-based Irish architectural design practice with a growing international reputation, supporting radical re-thinking of the boundaries of design for the 21st century. Based in Dublin, they have designed many of Ireland\'s seminal works of architecture of the last decade (Ussher Library, Trinity College and Waterford City Library) and have wide experience in making spaces and places for art (Model Arts and Niland Gallery Sligo, Source Arts Centre Thurles). Their open-ended questioning of the role of architecture includes a particular sensitivity to place - where the building is made and for whom - which will assist in making a great project for Kilkenny that will be a regional, national and international centre of excellence for the visual arts.
