20 Irish Cities, Towns, Counties & Islands to get Cultural on September 24th
Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) and Irish cultural legend Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh on Wednesday 16th August, at Dublin Castle, unveiled the incredible programme for Culture Night 2010.
On the 24th September 20 cities, towns , counties and islands across our island will offer access to an amazing array of free late night culture and people can now see the full programme at www.culturenight.ie. This is the biggest Culture Night to date and it is expected that over half a million people nationwide will explore and engage with culture on September 24th.
The theme of this year’s Culture Night is ‘What Will You See?’ and there is plenty to choose from! The participating regions, Dublin, Galway City, Galway County - Oughterard, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Wexford, Sligo, Mayo, Wicklow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Westmeath, Letterkenny, Kerry, Carlow, Leitrim, Roscommon, and The Gaeltacht regions, will be transformed into cultural playgrounds with culture in all its forms including painting, poetry, dance, opera, traditional music, architecture, history, theatre and more, accessible to people of all ages.
A record 132 cultural venues in Dublin will open their doors for Culture Night this year including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Light House Cinema, Freemasons’ Hall, National Museum of Ireland – Natural History, The Custom House, Quakers Meeting House, Irish Film Institute, National Leprechaun Museum, St Mary’s Abbey and many more.
To help visitors move around Dublin City on the night, Dublin Bus is providing free buses along three culture trails from 6pm to 11pm. Buses will leave every 20 minutes from bus stops at Bachelor’s Walk, Aston Quay and Trinity College transporting visitors to outermost venues.
So save the date, the 24th September 2010 will be a night of cultural exploration and fun!
MORE DETAILS ON CULTURE NIGHT EVENTS IN THE SOUTH EAST TO FOLLOW SHORTLY.

News Title: Culture Night Update

For the first time, the Gaeltacht regions will also host their own Culture Night, marking a great step in bringing culture closer to people and moving towards Temple Bar Cultural Trust’s vision of an all-Ireland Culture Night. Grandparents, grandchildren, families and people of all backgrounds will experience Culture Night – bringing together a very unique and diverse audience who all share a desire to explore the wealth of culture on their doorsteps.
Dermot McLaughlin, CEO of Temple Bar Cultural Trust, organizers of Culture Night, said, “Everyone working in culture and the arts in Ireland has faced huge economic and other challenges in the last year. Yet despite these difficulties Culture Night has expanded from 11 regions last year to 20 in 2010 and many new venues have been added to existing regions which is a testament to the resilience of Irish culture, creativity and the arts. We all recognise the value that Culture Night brings to communities and neighbourhoods all over Ireland, and the benefit it also brings to the cultural venues that take part in Culture Night.
“We are pleased to see that the importance of cultural venues to our society is increasingly recognised by Government, the local authorities and the public and private sectors. This is evident in Culture Night’s expansion to 20 regions this year, including the entire Gaeltacht region as well as Belfast and Derry hosting their own Culture Nights. We expect approximately half a million people to be engaged with Culture Night this year and there\'s plenty of room for everyone! So save the date, the 24th September 2010 will be a night of cultural exploration and fun!” Dermot added.
There is definitely plenty to see on Culture Night, why not….

A lot is happening in other constituencies. We have been slow off the mark in Carlow/Kilkenny, so we really need to put in a concerted effort over the next few weeks to make ourselves heard by our politicians and the general public. News Title: Chrysalis Arts UK (worked on Kilkenny Woodstock Project in 2009) Launches Sustainable Approach to Public Art: FREE GUIDELINES
Dates of News Item: 20-01-2010 to 20-12-2010
Email: kate@artdepot.org.uk
Website: http://www.pasaguidelines.org

Details:
The first ever set of FREE guidelines to help artists and commissioners embrace the sustainable as well as the artistic impact of their work has been launched by Chrysalis Arts
Public Art Sustainability Assessment (PASA for short) is a free interactive assessment tool available from
Kate Maddison, Director at Chrysalis Arts comments:”
“ When we set out to discover how to address sustainability within our public art practice, we were dismayed to find so little information to guide us. This prompted us to take the first step and start the process of establishing our own method of working sustainably. What we found interested us greatly because it threw the spot-light on issues that are relevant to others involved in commissioning and creating public art and beyond that to the way society values sustainability.”
“ Art has an ability to reflect and potentially influence our behaviour and public art is by its nature in the public eye. Chrysalis Arts believes it has a role to play in promoting responsible behaviour in this context. It soon became clear that we needed to disseminate this information widely, as the issues need to be dealt with by everyone involved in the process of planning, commissioning and implementing public art.”
The online interactive checklist is easy to use and covers the key issues which surround sustainable practice in public art. This checklist is supported by full guidelines and useful case studies.
To use the free PASA checklist and download the guidelines please visit and register at www.pasaguidelines.org
PASA has been created for artists and creative practitioners as well as public art organisations, local authorities, developers, commissioners, funders, architects, landscape architects, engineers, contractors, communities, schools and anyone else who may be involved in the commissioning, development, creation, maintenance and decommissioning of public art at different scales and in different contexts.
Chrysalis Arts have developed PASA in consultation with a wide range of partners – including artists and arts organisations, local authority officers, specialists from higher education establishments and environmental consultants Gaia Research, as well as looking to government sources and other creative practitioners such as architects for guidance on sustainable principles and practice.
“While artistic considerations should be foremost in creating public art, there is no reason why artists cannot embrace sustainable principles in the way in which they conceive and implement their ideas, as long as this is supported through the funding and commissioning process… “ Kate Maddison
Chrysalis Arts view PASA as very much the starting point in the debate around public art practice and sustainability, and hope that by throwing the debate open to others, the result in the long term will be a more sustainable way of working.

Details:
The Little Ghost Gallery is looking for new artistic neighbours. We are hoping to build up an artist community in and around the area of the Coach Road on the way up to St Canice’s Cathedral and Dean Street. This area has many properties to let and many empty office and shop front that we feel are going to waste. This is where we feel the artistic community can step in and create an established artistic ghetto of sorts.
There is a great studio space beside the gallery up for rent and we are hoping to get artists in make a creative atmosphere. The room is split into three spaces, one large, one medium and one small. There is a storage closet and the small room to the front could be used as a dark room if it’s needed. It’s a cosy little space and looks out onto the hill up to Canice’s Cathedral.
The space is ideal for an artist studio and would comfortably house at least 3 - 4 artists. The space is unfurnished but I\'m sure there would be a skip you can steal from somewhere. There is Gas heating and the electricity can be run off a meter if it suits you better than a bill.
Kilkenny is becoming a great place to set up shop as an artist. Since the new by-pass went in Dublin is less than an hour and a half away. Its 20 min from Thomastown and 10 min form Bennetsbridge. Perfect. If you’re an artist wanting to set up a new artist collective with a few other artists this space would be perfect and you have a gallery next door, what more do you need?
If you or someone you know would be interested in renting this space please contact us at the Little Ghost Gallery by emailing us at littleghostgallery@gmail.com and please pass it on to anyone you know who may be interested.
